About Me

My name is Jessica Vickers, and I am the founder of Akena Counseling & Wellness.  I hold a master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling, a bachelor's degree in behavioral science and an associate's degree in chemical dependency counseling. I am a licensed clinical professional counselor and a licensed clinical alcohol and drug counselor in Maryland. Additionally, I am a nationally certified counselor and an acupuncture detoxification practitioner.

My journey in the mental health and substance use recovery field is deeply personal, as I am a person in long term recovery myself. This firsthand experience has given me unique insights and empathy, which I bring to my practice every day. I understand the complexities and challenges that come with mental health struggles and addiction, and I am committed to helping others navigate their paths to recovery with compassion and support.

Over a Decade of Experience
With over 14 years of experience working in the behavioral health and recovery field, I have developed a deep understanding of the many facets of mental health and substance use disorders. My professional background includes working in various settings, both in outpatient and in residential settings. My career has afforded me opportunities to work with diverse populations, providing me with a broad perspective on effective treatment strategies. This extensive experience has equipped me with the knowledge and skills to offer tailored, evidence-based interventions that cater to each individual's unique needs. As an experienced lecturer and adjunct professor, I have a deep passion for educating others. I stay informed on the latest research in this field and am currently involved in an ongoing addiction research project.

A Holistic Approach to Healing
I believe in a holistic approach to mental health and recovery. This means addressing the mind, body, and spirit to promote overall well-being. I integrate various therapeutic models, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, existentialism,  mindfulness based interventions and somatic experiencing, to create a comprehensive treatment plan for each client. By considering all aspects of a person's life, I aim to uncover the root causes of their challenges and support them in achieving a personally satisfying higher quality of life.

Embracing All Pathways of Recovery

I believe that recovery is unique to each individual, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach. If
you have a desire for change, we can explore all possible pathways together. In a safe,
judgment-free space, we will work to identify and overcome any barriers that may be preventing
you from living your true, authentic self. My ultimate hope is to help you discover or rediscover meaning and purpose and to empower you to achieve your wellness goals.
